Aaron Rodgers is the New York Jets He's currently the main QB, but he's 40 years old.
Dane Brugler of The Athletic is suggesting that the Jets will pick Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft as a long-term solution at quarterback.
“Despite the high expectations for Sanders, he wouldn't be a guaranteed first-round pick if the draft was today. He has the skills but needs to show more consistent decision-making to secure a top-25 spot,” explained Brugler.
The addition of Sanders as a QB would be exciting for the Jets.
Shedeur is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion “Prime Time” Sanders.
Sanders started his college career at Jackson State from 2021 to 2022 before moving to Colorado in 2023. transferring to Colorado for 2023.
Sanders, 22, is 6-foot-2 and weighs 215 pounds according to the school’s website. At the major college football level, Sanders had a standout season last year.
He completed 69.3% of his passes, threw for 3,230 yards, and had a 27 touchdown-to-three interception ratio. Sanders also displayed his running ability with 111 rushes for 394 yards and four touchdowns, according to the school’s website.
Since 1992, the Jets have only drafted a quarterback in the first round four times in the history of the NFL draft.
Rodgers has publicly stated that he plans to play for the Jets for several seasons. If this happens, the Jets would have the opportunity to develop Sanders without immediately thrusting him into the starting position.
According to Brugler's early 2025 mock draft, three quarterbacks are projected to be selected in the first round, with Sanders being the final one at pick No. 22.
What About Jordan Travis?
There has been a lot of talk since the Jets traded up to pick Jordan Travis in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft. The team have lauded praised the young man for his leadership abilities and unique qualities.
However, private conversations with draft analysts suggest that his potential in the NFL is limited to being a backup QB. They mentioned that his physical limitations would hinder him from becoming a full-time starter, although they left open the possibility of him being a potential temporary starter in certain situations.
It’s important to note that if the Jets can develop Travis into a long-term backup QB, it would be a significant achievement for the organization, as quarterbacks are highly valuable assets whether they are starters or backups.
General manager Joe Douglas mentioned in his pre-draft press conference that he aims to turn the Jets into a “quarterback factory.” He expressed a desire to draft a new quarterback in every single draft cycle, ideally.
Under Douglas' leadership since June 2019, the New York Jets have not followed this approach historically. However, it could mark the beginning of a new era at 1 Jets Drive.
