On Wednesday, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders won 5-3 against the Rochester Red Wings at PNC Field. The RailRiders were down a run in the ninth but managed to tie the game and then Everson Pereira hit a home run for the win.
Both pitchers had a similar first inning with two walks, two flyouts, and a strikeout each. The second inning was quick and quiet, keeping the game scoreless.
The Red Wings took the lead in the third when Nationals No. 2 prospect James Wood hit a two-run homer.
SWB responded in the bottom half as Brandon Lockridge walked, Caleb Durbin got a hit, and Carlos Narvaez got a walk to load the bases. Back-to-back walks to Luis Torrens and Jeter Downs tied the game at two. Rochester’s Robert Gsellman then struck out a player to end the inning, leaving three on base. Gsellman went on to pitch 3.1 scoreless frames, keeping the home team quiet.
In the seventh, Wood broke the tie with his second homer of the game off of Cody Morris, giving Rochester a 3-2 lead. Wood was responsible for all of his team's runs.
In the ninth inning, the RailRiders fought back. Brandon Lockridge singled and then Caleb Durbin hit a double to left field, allowing Lockridge to score and tie the game at three. Durbin advanced to third on a throw home. Then, Everson Pereira hit a home run to win the game 5-3 for SWB.
Beeter finished after 90 pitches in five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out six, including Joey Gallo twice. Oddanier Mosqueda and Phil Bickford each had scoreless outings.
Amos Willingham (L, 2-1) allowed the tying and go-ahead runs in the ninth, resulting in Rochester's loss.
The RailRiders will continue their homestand on Thursday at PNC Field with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Southpaw Tanner Tully will start for SWB while righty Thaddeus Ward takes the ball for Rochester.
