“Lioness” will return.
Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller, which was previously called “Special Ops: Lioness,” will be back for a second season on Paramount+. The returning cast members are Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly and Nicole Kidman. Morgan Freeman will also be a regular in season two. Kidman and Saldaña are executive producers. The show is made by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios exclusively for Paramount+.
When the show premiered last summer, it broke the record for the most-watched worldwide series premiere on launch day for Paramount+. It had almost six million viewers in its first week on Paramount+ and the Paramount Network. This information comes from the official press release.
The show is inspired by a real military program. It follows CIA agent Joe (Saldaña) as she trains a young recruit (De Oliveira) to go undercover by being the best friend to the daughter of a known terrorist. It combines thrilling action with great character moments, and it was another successful show produced by Sheridan for the streaming service. (Sheridan also wrote all the episodes of the first season.)
Jeff Grossman, Executive Vice President of Programming at Paramount+, said in an official statement that the Paramount+ audience strongly supports the gripping, global story and the powerful performances from Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira and Nicole Kidman. He looks forward to more heart-stopping suspense and action in the second season.
Chris McCarthy, Office of the CEO at Paramount Global and President & CEO at Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in an official statement that “Lioness” captured audiences around the world as one of the most-watched global series premieres on Paramount+ last year. Season two, led by Taylor Sheridan's masterful storytelling and the remarkable performances of Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña, promises yet another riveting, adrenaline-fueled journey.
In addition to “Lioness,” Sheridan also has “Tulsa King” and “Mayor of Kingstown” on his Paramount+ slate (with new seasons currently in production), along with upcoming series “Landman” (led by Billy Bob Thornton) and a second season of “Yellowstone” prequel series “1923,” scheduled to shoot later this year. Previous Sheridan hits include “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” and “1883.”
