“The Office” spin-off featuring Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore has been given a series order. granted a series order at Peacock.
The new mockumentary series will be set in the same universe as “The Office,” with the documentary crew focusing on a failing newspaper. Gleeson and Impacciatore will lead the cast in the new series, created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman.
The official description is: “The documentary crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is seeking a new subject and comes across a struggling historic Midwestern newspaper and its publisher's efforts to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
Filming for the spin-off series is scheduled to start in July. A release date for the show has not been announced yet.
“More than 10 years after the final episode of ‘The Office’ aired on NBC, the beloved comedy series continues to grow in popularity on Peacock,” said NBCUniversal Entertainment president Lisa Katz. “This new series, set in the world of Dunder Mifflin, introduces a new group of characters in a fresh and comedic setting: a daily newspaper.”
Produced by Universal Television, the spin-off is executive produced by Daniels, Koman, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas.
Expanding “The Office” universe has been under consideration for some time, but Daniels indicated to TheWrap last fall that a reboot was not the appropriate approach.
“I feel like we ended that story beautifully — the characters had closure,” Daniels commented. “I'm not interested in remaking the same show with a different cast, as I believe we had the best cast ever in TV to do that show. So the idea of a reboot does not appeal to me.”
Instead, Daniels mentioned “The Mandalorian” as an attractive way to expand the “Star Wars” universe while creating a new story, suggesting that the “The Office” documentary crew could film a “documentary about a different subject.”
