The Brickhall School in Abuja announced that it will close for one week to mourn the loss of its four-year-old student, Miguel Ovoke.
The PUNCH previously reported on Ovoke's death at Excel Specialist Hospital in Abuja.
The medical report, signed by Dr. Akinwande Ajayi on behalf of the medical director, stated that the boy died from choking on meat during school lunch.
The hospital reported that the boy had fixed and dilated pupils, no response to light, impalpable pulses, unrecordable blood pressure, and no cardiopulmonary activity or respiratory excursions.
All efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, as indicated in the report.
The report concluded that he was brought in dead.
The school, in a statement, expressed sadness that despite the quick response of the school nurse and his transfer to the hospital, the boy could not be saved.
The school's management stated that they would honor Miguel's memory by closing the school for one week and requested that the community show respect and allow the completion of the autopsy.
The school urged everyone involved in the tragedy to honor Miguel's memory with dignity and peace, while waiting for medical professionals and law enforcement to conclude the autopsy.
The school expressed deep condolences to Miguel Ovoke's family, conveying profound sorrow and sympathy.
The school stated that Miguel tragically passed away on April 24, 2024, after choking on a piece of meat from his home-packed meal despite immediate care from staff and the school nurse.
Following the incident, the school held an urgent meeting with the community in response to the tragic event.
Classes were suspended for over a week to honor Miguel's memory and allow the community to grieve and reflect on the loss.
