After lots of rain last week, there was flooding in North Texas, and a 4-year-old boy died.
Over the weekend, 4-year-old Lucas Warren of Burleson, south of Fort Worth, swept away because of heavy flood waters, according to Fox 4 KDFW.
Investigators found the boy’s body a few hours after the first search. Warren was with his parents early in the morning when his father drove into an area with high waters along County Road 528 in Burleson.
A caller to 911 told police that the family got out of their car to get to higher ground.
“They were walking out together, holding the child, and the water rushed through, knocked them off their feet, and carried them downstream,” Chief Deputy James Saulter told Fox 4. “They got separated. At one point, the mother had the little boy for a while, and then she lost hold of him.”
The strong rushing water made it hard for search and rescue teams, and the team’s drone was not very helpful due to the area being covered in trees and large pieces of debris, the chief said.
“The drones could’ve helped us, but they couldn’t get far. There was so much debris flowing through there; there were cars, car trailers, side-by-side golf carts,” said Saulter. “We had to pull the boats out; the rescue team had to pull the boats out because the water was just too strong at one point.”
The deputy chief mentioned that the department is still investigating the incident.
Warren would have turned 5 years old in two weeks.
Relatives have started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the Warren family’s expenses, aiming for $75,000. The webpage says that the child’s father Aaron Warren has been hospitalized for injuries from the incident.
“The accident wrecked their only car, damaged their phones, and carried away their wallets. They are in great need, and any contributions will be used for Lucas’ funeral,” a relative wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Any extra donations after the funeral costs will go directly to Aaron and Chelsey to help them rebuild their lives. This is the toughest thing anyone in my family has ever experienced.”
