Southampton are having to make an important choice about what lies ahead for Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu, as stated by Givemesports.
Onuachu’s strong performance while on loan at Trabzonspor has put Southampton in a situation where they can benefit either way. The news source has suggested that Southampton needs to choose whether to bring him back to their main team or take advantage of his high market value by selling him this summer.
The 29-year-old was signed for €18m in January but did not impress, playing only 11 games before Southampton was relegated last season.
However, his time on loan in Turkey has seen him regain his scoring ability, as Onuachu scored 12 goals in 19 matches for Trabzonspor.
“Southampton has a tough decision to make regarding Onuachu, and it could benefit them either way,” Givemesports stated.
“He scored three goals in his first game back from injury in Turkey and suddenly his critics were silenced. His goal tally has been quite good this season, which is great news for Southampton.
“If they decide to bring him back, then they would have a striker with renewed confidence and motivation. But if they feel he still doesn’t fit their style, then at least they could consider a transfer more seriously because he has proven that he would have good value in the market.
“Trabzonspor might not be able to afford him and may want him for a second season on loan, but that's a situation that I'm not certain Southampton would truly benefit from.”
In 2021, Onuachu became the fifth Nigerian to win the Ebony Shoe award after he scored 33 goals to emerge as the top African goal scorer in Belgium that season.
