The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Monday, went against Governor Siminialayi Fubara's approval to make the Rivers State Public Procurement (Amendment)Bill 2024 a law.
The house decided to pass the bill into law during its 173rd legislative session.
This information was in a statement titled- ‘Rivers Assembly Overides Governor Fubara’s Assent, Passes Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill into Law’ with a sub-title ‘ Gives Electricity Market Bill, Local Government (Consolidation) Bill First Reading’
The statement was released by the media aide to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Wachukwu, and sent to reporters in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The statement remembered that the House had approved the procurement bill on March 26, 2024 and sent it to the governor for approval, which he refused.
The statement mentioned, “The Speaker, Martin Chike Amaewhule, emphasized the importance of the bill, which is to protect taxpayers' money and ensure that it is not spent on unnecessary and unclear contracts.”
The statement also mentioned that the speaker criticized a situation where proper procedure is ignored, and contracts are awarded without legal support.
He said that despite all the misconduct, the House will continue to uphold the laws of Rivers State and the 1999 Constitution, and warned that if the governor continues to violate the state's laws, the House will take stricter actions at the right time.
