“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be the only major release from Marvel this year. Initially, Marvel head Kevin Feige didn't like the idea. Ryan Reynolds, the star, mentioned that Feige rejected the actor’s first pitch for the movie's plot.
In an interview released on Friday with Empire Magazine, Reynolds revealed that he initially wanted to create a “Rashomon” style story for the superhero film. This would have focused on “something that they got into together, but told from three completely different perspectives.” The aim was to make a huge film in a smaller way.
However, Feige said no to that. According to the Marvel boss, it was because he wasn't sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet. did want to do.
Feige expressed, “I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet. I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits.”
Feige mentioned that Reynolds “is an idea machine” and came up with many more options. Reynolds confirmed, saying that when Feige turned him down, he came up with about 18 other ways to make the film, ranging from large to small budgets.
Reynolds shared, “Some of them were almost like a Sundance film, with a budget of under $10 million, using the IP in an unprecedented way, and I pitched bigger movies, as well as those in-between.”
Ultimately, it seems Hugh Jackman himself assisted in cracking the story. It’s not clear what the story will be, but from the latest trailer, it seems to involve alternate dimensions and characters we’ve seen before.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be in theaters on July 26, 2024.
