The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has rejected the claim that the governorship primary election did not happen in the state, labeling the report as surprising and not trustworthy.
The party responded to a media report citing the Independent National Electoral Commission's assertion that there was no election during the primary in some wards in Ondo State.
In a statement released by the party’s state Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaiye on Monday, the party affirmed that the election took place in all the Local Government Areas of the state, except in Ifedore and Ilaje LGs.
Kalejaiye stated, “Elections indeed occurred in all the 18 Local Government Areas in the state. There were protests in Ifedore and Ilaje LGAs. While the results in Ifedore were nullified, those in Ilaje impacted about four wards, which were also nullified.
“The purpose of these cancellations was to underscore the legitimacy of the entire process and uphold fairness. The voting influence of our members in the affected areas was not significant enough to undermine the credibility of the process or impact the margin by which the candidate emerged.
The party, therefore, questions the credibility of the report attributed to an INEC representative. The state chapter warns against unwarranted desperation from some members who have pledged “to do everything possible to discredit the process.”
He encouraged the party’s supporters to disregard the false report and concentrate “on the bigger task ahead to win the governorship election and maintain the Sunshine State for the APC.”
The incumbent party conducted its primary across the 18 LGAs of the state on April 20, 2024, and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa emerged victorious after securing 48,596 votes, surpassing the other 15 contestants. won Yet, unsatisfied with the primary, five of the aspirants petitioned the primary election’s appeal committee to contest the outcome of the primary.
