Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, the Archbishop, Province of the Niger and Bishop, Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, expressed on Saturday that Nigeria is rapidly moving towards economic and political failure.
Ibezim made this statement while delivering the Archbishop’s Charge during the 2nd Session of the 13th Synod of the Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, in Awka.
He mentioned that poverty and hunger were significant threats to the nation’s peace and unity.
As a result, he urged the authorities to make united efforts to improve the economic and security challenges faced by the people.
He noted that it was regrettable that, despite the efforts of the Federal Government, the prices of food and other essential items had continued to increase.
Ibezim criticized the economic policies of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration as lacking the necessary values for the economy and called on Mr President to revamp his economic policies.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on poverty and hunger in the country.
“The suffering experienced by Nigerians is worsened by the weakening naira due to the forex exchange situation and increases in fuel, cooking gas, kerosene and electricity prices.
“The time has come for the leadership of the country to prevent the impending danger. Nigeria is rapidly on the way to economic and political ruin. May God help our nation, Nigeria.
“The reality is that injustice holds back a nation and once a belief in injustice takes root among a people, no amount of force can suppress it unless justice is served,” he said.
The Archbishop praised the Prof. Charles Soludo-led government in Anambra for the progress made in the state, particularly in the education sector.
He encouraged the governor not to waver in his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises.
He also drew the governor’s attention to specific areas in the state struggling with the problem of cultism and touting.
The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, emphasized the significant role of the church in modern Nigeria.
He urged church leaders to step up their efforts in children’s ministry to instill positive values in them from a young age.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the 3-day Synod with the theme “Running the Christian Race: Implications for the church in perilous times” is taking place in Awka Central Archdeaconry, Church of the Pentecost, Awka.
NAN also reported that the Archbishop’s Charge service attracted nine Archbishops and 35 Bishops, traditional rulers, government officials and over 700 faithful.
