President Joe Biden will grant the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 people, such as media and entertainment personalities, as announced by the administration on Friday.
The medal is the highest honor for non-military individuals, given to those who have made outstanding contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other important societal, public or private efforts.
Among this year’s honorees is Michelle Yeoh, an Oscar-winning actress being acknowledged for her innovative work and for breaking stereotypes while enriching American culture.
Additionally, journalist Phil Donahue, whose talk show “Donahue” changed daytime TV, will also receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Other awardees comprise of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Rep. Jim Clyburn, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, former Vice President Al Gore, civil rights activist Clarence B. Jones, Former Secretary of State John Kerry, Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, sports superstar Jim Thorpe, and others.
The ceremony will take place at the White House on Friday, and each recipient will receive the Medal of Freedom from President Biden.
The Biden Administration stated in a press release that “These nineteen Americans formed teams, coalitions, movements, organizations, and businesses that positively influenced America.
