PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles picked Quinyon Mitchell, a cornerback from Toledo, as the 22nd selection in the NFL draft on Thursday night.
Mitchell clocked a 4.33-second time in the 40-yard dash at the combine. This was the first time the Eagles chose a cornerback in the first round since 2002.
The selection was the second major move of the night, following the contract extension for wide receiver A.J. Brown. The Eagles and Brown agreed to a three-year extension, with $84 million guaranteed, as informed by a source familiar with the situation.
The individual spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday, under the condition of anonymity, as the financial terms were not disclosed.
Brown is on track to become the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, earning $32 million per season and potentially up to $96 million throughout the extension's duration.
Brown recorded 106 catches for 1,456 receiving yards last season, and had 88 catches for 1,496 yards in 2022 in his first year with the Eagles.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and the scouts have had more successes than failures in recent drafts. This was evident in the Eagles' Super Bowl appearance in the 2022 season, and their 10-1 start last season before a late-season collapse.
Jalen Hurts, the second-round QB picked at No. 53 overall in 2020, has proven to be an exceptional steal for the franchise. Additionally, DeVonta Smith, who secured an extension with $51 million guaranteed this week, remains a bargain from the 2021 first round. Jordan Mailata transitioned from an Australian rugby player to a seventh-round pick in 2018, and has become one of the top left tackles in the NFL. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter was the No. 9 pick last season, and finished as the runner-up in the 2023 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
The Eagles also have the 50th and 53rd overall picks in the second round, along with five other draft selections.
