The 19th Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja will see the table tennis men's singles final, with Keye Adekunle from NNPC facing Oyewole Olusegun from Chevron Nigeria today.
Adekunle beat pre-Games favorite and NOGIG 2020 silver medalist Joseph Adebayo of NCDMB in straight sets 11/8, 11/7, and 11/8 to reach the final.
The semi-final was an intense match, keeping the audience at the edge of their seats.
Adekunle, after winning the match, recognized the skill of his opponent, noting that they have known each other for a long time.
“We have known each other for long. He is a very good player. At times he beats me too. Today (Thursday) was my day,” he said.
Adekunle also mentioned, “After seeing the draw, I knew we were going to meet in the semi-finals. So, I was better prepared and like I said earlier, we know each other too well.”
He expressed readiness for the final, where he will face the champion Olusegun.
“Last edition, I was not able to get to the final because I was walked over. But this is a different scenario altogether.”
However, Olusegun stated his determination to retain his gold medal.
“It’s going to be a little bit tough,” he started. “My opponent is a left-handed player, and his type are usually difficult to beat.. But I am going to face him as he comes because I am not going to let go of my gold medal.”
