The Federal Airport Authority has redirected all flight activities from terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed Airport to the D wing due to a fire event.
FAAN also stated that the airport's engineers have cut off power from the entire E wing to extinguish the spreading fire that began at approximately 5:29 am on Thursday.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, smoke emerged from the E54 bridge and later turned into fire, causing unease at the airport.
FAAN, along with the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services team, managed to restore order in the area after some airport personnel and travelers panicked and fled.
The statement mentions, "Smoke was seen billowing from the E54 Bridge, prompting electrical engineers to promptly cut off power to the entire E Wing.
The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) team responded quickly, arriving at the scene by 05:30 hrs. Initial suspicions indicate sparks from an electrical unit as the cause, but a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the fire's cause.
The incident, which evolved into a fire, was brought under control by 06:41 hrs. Efforts to clear the smoke from the building are underway. Meanwhile, all flight operations in Terminal 1 of MMA have been redirected to the D Wing. More details will follow soon.
