The Philadelphia Eagles have made moves to secure DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert are in Jalen Hurts‘ supporting cast for the foreseeable future, and a report suggests general manager Howie Roseman is working towards making sure A.J. Brown isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, either.
Eagles sideline reporter and Sports Radio 94.1 WIP weekend host Howard Eskin reported that Philadelphia and Brown have started discussing a long-term contract.
Howard Eskin told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday’s 94WIP Morning Show that Philadelphia is considering giving A.J. Brown a contract extension. Eskin told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday’s 94WIP Morning Showthat talks have already begun with A.J. Brown’s agent about an extension, and there's no intention to trade him.
Brown has had the best two seasons of his career since joining the Eagles, playing a crucial role in the team's journey to the Super Bowl in 2022.
The 26-year-old had a career-high 106 receptions for 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023, bringing his total to 379 catches for 5,947 yards and 42 touchdowns since being drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
After being traded to the Eagles, Brown signed a four-year extension worth $100 million.
However, there is no guaranteed money left on his current deal, so an extension would help address trade rumors about the 26-year-old All-Pro.
What a Contract Extension for A.J. Brown Could Entail
The Eagles still have a lot of cap space before the draft and a potential extension for Brown.
Despite several moves in free agency and signing Landon Dickerson, Jordan Mailata, and Smith to long-term extensions, the Eagles still have over $4.1 million in cap space this season, $25.8 million in 2025, and $68.23 million in 2026, according to Spotrac.
Meanwhile, Smith signed an extension for $25 million per year, and Amon-Ra St. Brown‘s extension with the Detroit Lions worth a reported $30.0025 million per year, which could serve as references for Brown's new deal.
It's possible that Brown could set a new standard for receivers with a deal around $32.5 million with the Eagles.
Likewise, Philadelphia likely wants to have a deal signed before any resolution between CeeDee Lamb and the Dallas Cowboys and Justin Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings, which could drive up Brown’s price.
How Nick Sirianni Plans to Utilize A.J. Brown, Saquon Barkley
When the 2024 season begins, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni will have a highly talented offensive lineup, including Brown, Smith, and Goedert around quarterback Jalen Hurts, giving them the ability to attack defenses in various ways.
Sirianni proposes that he and new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will adopt the Eagles' approach to fitting Barkley into Philadelphia’s plan, similar to how they used Brown.
“A few years ago, we brought in A.J., and we put in a lot of effort to understand what A.J. does well.”
Sirianni informed reporters at the NFL’s Annual Meeting on March 26 . “We do this beforehand, and then we delve even deeper after acquiring him. ‘What are A.J.'s strengths, and how can we utilize them?’ It’s been a comparable process with Saquon.”Barkley comes to Philadelphia after amassing 7,311 total yards from scrimmage since being selected as the second overall pick by the New York Giants in the 2018 NFL Draft.
“The remarkable thing is that good players fit well into systems,” Sirianni stated to reporters. “He’s clearly a very good player. We're incredibly thrilled to have him. The playing style and leadership he brings. Players like him will excel in any role you assign them. We're currently exploring the approaches we'll use to incorporate him. Our offensive staff is dedicated to this. It's truly fantastic to have a player of his caliber join our team.”
Philadelphia Eagles are working on securing a long-term contract extension for A.J. Brown to ensure he remains a crucial part of their offense.
