The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has instructed the formation of a committee to create a plan for working with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
Idris gave the instruction in Abuja on Wednesday when he met James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, during a courtesy visit to his office.
The committee aims to enhance awareness about the rights and advantages of people with disabilities.
Idris, in a statement signed by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, on Thursday promised the ministry’s support for the commission’s mission of protecting the rights and dignity of people with disabilities and fighting discrimination.
The minister stressed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to social inclusion, and promised to push for the adoption of Disability law by state governments.
“From today, we will set up a committee that is going to work closely with you to look at your specific needs so that we can help ensure that your aims and objectives are achieved,” Idris noted.
In addition, Idris emphasized the valuable contributions of the 35 million people with disabilities to Nigeria’s National Values Charter implementation.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Dr James Lalu, showed interest in working with the Ministry to raise awareness of disability rights.
He emphasized the importance of providing equal access to services for people with disabilities and highlighted their untapped potential for economic advancement.
In March, the federal government pledged to support People With Disabilities and defend their rights against discrimination, stigmatization, and marginalization.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Isa, also emphasized that Tinubu has taken steps to ensure full implementation of the National Disability Act.https://punchng.com/fg-promises-to-shield-pwds-from-stigmatisation/
