Wilfred Ndidi is about to match his best number of goals in one season when he plays his 30th game for Leicester City against Southampton on Tuesday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Ndidi recently scored his fifth goal of the season in his 270th game for the club in a thrilling 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in a Midlands derby last Saturday, which helped Leicester reach the top of the English Championship table.
The 27-year-old midfielder, currently third in assists for the club with six, has scored five times in 33 games in all competitions this season.
Since arriving in 2014, Ndidi's best goal tally in Europe was during the 2016/17 season, when he scored six goals in 57 games for Belgian side Genk and Leicester.
Ndidi scored twice over two legs against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League for Genk, once in the Belgian Cup, and when he joined Leicester, he scored three times for the Foxes in the winter transfer window of that season.
He also scored twice in the Premier League (against Stoke City and Watford) and once in the FA Cup against Derby County in the fourth round.
The game against Southampton will be his 30th in the Championship season, and he has scored three goals and made five assists while playing in a more attacking role for the Foxes.
Leicester are at the top of the EFL table with 91 points from 43 games, and a win against the Saints could improve their chances of getting promoted with two games left to play.
The game will also give Nigerian duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Joe Aribo chances to increase their goals this season. Iheanacho, who has only played 45 minutes in the league in 2024, will hope to benefit from Enzo Maresca’s rotation as Jamie Vardy rarely starts two games in a row.
But Iheanacho faces tough competition from Patson Daka and Tom Cannon. Daka has more goals (seven) and assists (five) than him. Aribo, on the other hand, has scored four times in 32 league games and will aim to score in consecutive games for the first time this season.
