Vertical has got the rights to release the horror movie 'The Exorcism,' featuring Russell Crowe, in North America. It will come out this summer.
If this sounds kind of familiar, it's because Crowe was also in another exorcism film. last year, the underrated “The Pope’s Exorcist.”
The new movie tells the story of Anthony Miller (played by Crowe), “an actor facing problems while filming a supernatural horror movie.” His daughter (played by Ryan Simpkins) starts to question whether he's returned to his past addiction or if something supernatural is happening.
“The Exorcism” was directed and co-written (with M.A. Fortin) by Joshua John Miller, who started his career as an actor. His father Jason Miller played Father Damien Karras in “The Exorcist,” and his mother Susan Bernard appeared in “Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” His half-brother is Jason Patric.
Miller and Fortin previously wrote the enjoyable “The Final Girls.” They also created and produced “Queen of the South,” which aired for five seasons on USA Network.
The movie is from Miramax, producer Kevin Williamson, and Outerbanks Entertainment. Besides Crowe and Simpkins, it also stars Sam Worthington, Chlöe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, and David Hyde Pierce.
Miller and Fortin said, “Vertical has been a great partner in helping us complete and realize our vision for this story. Their level of enthusiasm and support are rare to find.”
Vertical partner Peter Jarowey added, “Joshua has a profound expertise in this genre, and we applaud his creation of a film that reverently nods to classic horror while adding a fresh twist. We want to thank everyone at Miramax for their partnership and are looking forward to bringing the film to theaters nationwide this summer.”
The movie will be in theaters starting June 7, 2024, and Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller, and the supernatural, has also acquired the rights to it.
Deadline was first to report the news.
