The Kano Fire Service confirmed on Monday that a 60-year-old man, Malam Danjuma, his son Ibrahim, 35, and Aminu Gaye, also 35, lost their lives while trying to retrieve a phone from a pit toilet in Yar’Gwanda Village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of the state.
The Kano Fire Service spokesman, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, verified the incident in a press release issued on Sunday.
However, he mentioned that a 28-year-old man named Abba Alasan was saved from the incident.
The statement said, “We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at about 11:00 a.m. from one Aminu Yar’gwanda, that four men were trapped inside a pit toilet while attempting to help each other.
“We immediately sent our rescue team to the scene at about 11:15 a.m.
“Danjuma was trying to retrieve a cell phone that fell into the pit toilet when he got trapped. Thereafter, his son entered the pit toilet to save his father and also got trapped.
“Gaye and Alasan also entered the toilet to rescue both men and also got trapped, in the process,” he said.
According to Abdullahi, the first three victims were rescued unconscious while the fourth victim was rescued alive.
He said all the victims were handed over to the Superintendent of Police, Iro Lado, at the Tsanyawa police division.
The spokesman noted that the police took the victims to Bichi Special Hospital for medical attention where doctors on duty confirmed the three dead and one alive.
