Mr Biodun Oyebanji, the Governor of Ekiti State, has agreed to provide N138.7m in order to give car and housing loans to 448 teaching and non-teaching staff of the state Teaching Service Commission.
A statement from the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission, Mr Mike Omolayo, revealed that this information was given to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Saturday.
Omolayo mentioned that those who are accepted for the program should collect introduction letters signed by their principals and bursars, provide their official identity cards, as well as copies of their biometric data forms, appointment, and confirmation letters to help with the payment process.
Omolayo explained that the government's action is meant to motivate teaching and non-teaching staff in public secondary schools in the state to carry out their responsibilities more effectively. He also clarified that repayment will start from the June 2024 salary.
PUNCH reported that Oyebanji had promised in January to resolve the issue of non-distribution of car and housing loans to primary school teachers in the state, so they can begin to receive similar benefits to their secondary school counterparts.
In February, the governor fulfilled this promise by authorizing the allocation of N200m to be given out as car and housing loans to primary school teachers in the state.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Yinka Oyebode, indicated that the governor's action was in line with his commitment to make sure that teachers in public primary schools in the state are able to enjoy some of the same benefits as those teaching in secondary schools.
