The Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, has promised Nigerians that the senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, will have a new coach in the next one or two weeks.
Finidi George has been in charge of the team temporarily while the Nigeria Football Federation looks for a suitable replacement for Jose Peseiro, whose contract ended at the close of February.
“Unfortunately, the senior national team currently has no coach. We played two friendly matches and had Finidi George oversee those two games.
“The primary responsibility of hiring a coach falls to the NFF and I have been in contact with the NFF because I believe that Nigerians did not expect that after AFCON and after the contract with coach Peseiro came to an end and wasn’t renewed, it would take this long to have a new coach.
“But NFF is aware that our next qualifiers in June are approaching. What I can guarantee is that within the next one or two weeks at the most, the senior national team will have a new coach,” Enoh told Channels TV’s Sports Tonight on Thursday.
The Eagles will be aiming to recover from disappointing draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifiers when they face South Africa in June.
The minister emphasized that the country cannot afford to miss out on another World Cup following the 2022 setback.
“I think we have not had a great start. It’s a shaky one, and therefore, there is a distance to cover considering that we didn’t go to the last World Cup. We cannot afford not to go to the next one, so everything needs to be done.
“Following AFCON and our impressive performance, I think everyone expects that we should be able to build on that and move forward,” Enoh said.
