The Plateau State University in Bokkos Local Government Area has been closed.
The university was closed after gunmen attacked the nearby Chikam community and killed a second-year student of the school.
The university's Registrar, Yakubu Ayuba, announced the closure in a statement on Friday.
He stated, "Due to the unfortunate incident at Plateau State University Bokkos and the surrounding community on Friday 19 April 2024; and the psychological impact on the students and staff, the university management has decided to close the university for ten days starting from today, 19th April, 2024.
"This decision aims to improve the security situation and reduce the risk to the university community.
"As a result, the ongoing first semester exams are suspended and will resume on Thursday 2nd May, 2024.
The Registrar also mentioned that the "management has arranged buses to transport stranded students from the university to Barkin Ladi today, Friday, 19th April 2024.
Meanwhile, the University Visitor and State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has condemned the attacks in the institution and surrounding areas and called for enhanced security to protect the people in the affected areas.
As stated in a release by the Governor's Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, he said, "After the tragic attack on Chikam, a community near Plateau State University Bokkos, resulting in the loss of a 200-level Computer Science student, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has appealed for calm as security agencies work to restore normalcy.
"While denouncing the attack as barbaric, Governor Mutfwang assured citizens, especially students, of the government's unwavering commitment to safeguarding their lives and property.
"The Governor urged them to remain composed in the face of the tragedy, as the government is determined to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the heinous acts.
The statement noted that Mutfwang "emphasized the importance of cooperation among the university management, students, community leaders, and security agencies for improved security and safety in the area.
"He praised the swift response of security agencies to violent incidents and encouraged them to continue fulfilling their duty to protect innocent citizens.
Mutfwang offered condolences to the family of the deceased student and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
