The Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival, which had not been held for 14 years, was inaugurated by Agbu Kefas, the Governor of Taraba State.
This information was disclosed in a statement posted on the state government’s X account on Friday.
The state government shared pictures from the festival with a caption stating, “Governor Kefas revives Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival, After a 14-year hiatus.
“The festival was inaugurated on Friday with a grand opening ceremony held at the picturesque Lake Nwonyo in the Ibi local Government area of Taraba State.”
Nwonyo Fishing and Cultural Festival is recognized as one of the oldest events of its kind in Africa.
The festival commenced approximately 96 years ago and traditionally takes place at Nwonyo Lake, situated about five kilometers north of Ibi town.
The Nwonyo Fishing Festival includes activities such as canoe parades, vibrant cultural exhibitions, swimming, boat racing, masquerade dances, and the fish-catch competition, regarded as the main event.
