The International Olympic Committee revealed on Friday its intention to utilize artificial intelligence in the Paris Olympics, which will be a first in the event's history.
Members of the committee conducted a 90-minute interactive discussion regarding the use of AI in the upcoming Olympics, leading to the creation of the launch Olympic AI Agenda.
This announcement comes less than 100 days before the start of the Olympics, with the opening ceremony scheduled for July 26th.
IOC President Thomas Bach told informed the media about integrating AI and stated that the committee has decided to move forward with this plan due to the Olympics' history of embracing innovation.
“Today we are taking another step to maintain the distinctiveness of the Olympic Games and the significance of sport, and to achieve this, we must be leaders of change rather than the subjects of it. Today, with the ever-accelerating development of digital technology, particularly AI, we find ourselves at such a crossroads,” he clarified.
Bach added that the Olympic organizers recognize the need for humans to be at the forefront of this AI agenda, emphasizing that the committee was “committed to leveraging the immense potential of AI in a responsible manner.”
“In doing so, the IOC aims to chart the path for the AI future of sport with responsible leadership, embracing change while upholding the Olympic values,” he remarked.
The IOC plans to utilize AI in various aspects during the Olympics, including its use in refereeing to ensure accuracy and efficiency during specific events.
Bach further elaborated on how AI could aid in identifying future athletes and enhancing training approaches in the years between the games, which would enhance the overall quality presented every four years.
Beyond sports, AI could support the IOC in organizing the games and broadcasts to deliver personalized and immersive experiences for fans.
The committee acknowledged the efforts of the IOC AI Working Group, established in 2023 and consisting of “an eminent group of experts from across the globe, including AI pioneers, academics, athletes, and representatives of technology firms,” to determine the optimal use of AI in the Olympics.
