The recent increasing rate of deaths in Awka, the Anambra State capital, and nearby areas has become a cause of concern for people living there.
The situation continues to create serious problems for residents and businesses in the area.
There have been deaths in Awka since Easter Sunday because of clashes between rival groups related to cults, and these deadly incidents have been ongoing almost every day.
More than 15 individuals have reportedly been killed at various places in the area and surrounding areas.
On Wednesday evening, someone was shot at a gasoline station at Aroma Roundtable, Awka.
Additionally, on Thursday morning, another person believed to be a state traffic official was also shot and killed in front of a motor park, also located in the Aroma roundabout.
It was reported that the desire for revenue collection control and the town union government is consistently contributing to the conflict.
This situation has prompted certain important individuals in the area to come together to discuss how to address the problem and protect lives and property.
One of them, the Chairman of Awka Capital Territory Development Agency, Ossy Onuko, expressed concern about the situation when speaking to journalists in Awka on Friday.
Onuko stated that if the situation is not promptly addressed, it could discourage investors and residents who were previously enjoying the calmness brought about by the leadership of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
He mentioned, "The series of cult-related killings in Awka has compelled us to review activities and come up with significant decisions that we are not ready to discuss in the media at this time.
"The stakeholders have agreed that we will not permit individuals to disrupt the efforts of the state government in revitalizing and rejuvenating the city into a model of a livable and thriving town.
"As a result, we are appealing to the young people and all those involved in the cult-related killings to change their ways and realize that there is no benefit in what they have chosen to involve themselves in.
Another important person and member representing Awka South Constituency 1, Henry Mbachu, said there was an urgent need to separate cult involvement from criminal activity in order to address the recent gun-related deaths without further delay.
Mbachu expressed regret that most young individuals join cult groups without fully understanding what they are getting into, emphasizing the need for the National Orientation Agency and other relevant organizations to engage in reeducating the public about the dangers of joining cult groups.
The legislator, who acknowledged that religious leaders, the media, and other important individuals also have a role in addressing the situation, mentioned that a window of opportunity has been provided for those wishing to renounce cultism and embrace peace.
He mentioned, "Most young individuals join cult groups without fully understanding what they are getting into, and this is a cause for concern. Religious leaders, the media, and other stakeholders have a role in addressing this dangerous trend.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Chief ThankGod Anago, stated that the deaths in Awka City have evolved into a widespread problem that needs to be addressed using various approaches.
