The head of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), has announced that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, will be giving a talk at the 2024 NBA Annual General Conference.
The NBA president clarified that Okonjo-Iweala was chosen because of her accomplishments in Nigeria and around the world.
Maikayu expressed that the Director-General of the WTO will address legal professionals in the country on ways they can help with national reconstruction.
He stressed the importance of lawyers understanding and embracing their crucial role in advancing national development.
Maikayu made these remarks at the unveiling of the conference logo and theme in Abuja on Thursday.
He conveyed, “As lawyers, we need to change our approach. If we are dissatisfied with our current situation, then we must adjust the way we operate.
“At times, one may wonder what is awry, considering that Nigeria has immense potential. However, our reality does not reflect this potential.
“We are aware of the resources and talent we possess as a nation, both in terms of natural and human resources. Globally, Nigerians are making significant strides in various fields. It makes one question what we are failing to do correctly as a nation.
“I believe that our attitude is mainly responsible for our current position and experiences.
“This is why we have chosen Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a highly accomplished and respected Nigerian figure, as the keynote speaker for our conference this year.”
The PUNCH reported that the conference, themed “Pressing Forward: A National Posture For Rebuilding Nigeria,” will take place in Lagos from August 23 to 30, 2024.
