IRVING — The Invited Celebrity Classic at Las Colinas Country Club starts this weekend with Tony Romo, a former Dallas Cowboy, trying to keep his championship as the event begins its third year.
Known for being one of the most enthusiastic golfers among athletes, the ex-quarterback and current NFL broadcaster has participated in the tournament every year since it started. He's looking forward to protecting his title while the event continues to gain attention in the sports world. event continues to gain recognition across the sports world.
“This event is becoming one of those that you mark on your calendar and plan for in advance,” Romo mentioned during his media meeting on Thursday before starting the tournament. “You anticipate it even before it begins, and I believe that speaks to the organizers' effort because it’s so well-executed, and it draws many fans and excited individuals. It’s a really pleasant experience.”
As Romo tries to repeat as champion on the amateur side of the Pro-Am, he is well aware of the improving tournament field, which includes former golfers Annika Sorenstam and Blair O’Neal, as well as many other notable athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other celebrities from television.
“The talent has improved significantly since it began,” Romo remarked. “There are the usual suspects, but now I think there are eight, 10, 12 individuals who can consistently win and have a strong weekend. … I believe that’s beneficial for the sport. … This feels like a major.”
Sorenstam has also participated in the tournament every year and shared what she enjoys about playing in the event, which pairs PGA TOUR Champions players with celebrity participants.
“It’s wonderful to be back,” she informed the media after her round on Thursday. “I’m always thankful for the invitation. It’s an enjoyable event in many different ways. I like playing with the celebrities, playing with the Champions, and just being here in Dallas.”
The 2024 Invited Celebrity Classic officially teed off on Thursday and continues all weekend. Romo is paired with Justin Leonard, and Sorenstam is playing with Scott Dunlap.
