Denton ISD plans to start building a new high school in September as part of the $1.4 billion bond program approved by voters almost a year ago.
The school, including sports facilities, will be constructed on Naylor Road in the Town of Cross Roads, as indicated by a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing. The estimated construction cost is $280 million for the 627,163-square-foot school, and the expected completion date is July 2027.
The project's funding, along with several others, is covered in Proposition A, which addresses district growth, safety and security, and student opportunities.
The proposition also includes plans for replacing the 55-year-old Ginnings Elementary and the 53-year-old Borman Elementary, as well as building three new elementary schools, high school No.5, and an advanced technology center. The district also proposes Elementary No.26 and No.27 for the Braswell Zone, and No.28 for the Denton Zone. Additionally, a high school No.5 and an advanced technology center will cater to the growth in the eastern part of Denton ISD.
The other high schools in Denton are Braswell High, Guyer High, Ryan High, Fred Moore High, and Denton High. LaGrone Academy is a modern facility offering professional training and pre-college courses for high school students interested in high-demand careers.
Last month, The Dallas Express reported plans for improvements at three middle schools , including the installation of artificial turf on football fields, addition of new track and field event areas, erection of chain-link fences around facilities, and construction of 2,400-square-foot storage units. The district, with approximately 32,000 students, expects to increase that number by 4,000 in the next five years in one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S.
In the 2021-2022 school year, the graduation rate was nearly 98%, considerably higher than the state average of 90%. In comparison, only about 81% of Dallas ISD’s Class of 2022 managed to graduate in four years despite the best efforts of educators.
