The number of deaths from conflicts between rival cult groups continues to increase, as individuals believed to be cult members killed a middle-aged person at the UNIZIK temporary site junction in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, on Tuesday.
Details about the killing were not clear, but it was reported that a man known as “Nwanayoeze” by local residents was shot and killed near the Tricycle Park, UNIZIK Junction.
A source and a trader in the area mentioned, “The attackers quickly left after shooting the young man. Later, his fellow cult members arrived and took his body away to prevent it from being taken by the security forces.”
Traders in the UNIZIK Junction area confirmed that the victim was a well-known young person in the area and was feared by many.
The ongoing conflict between cults around Awka has resulted in multiple deaths since Easter Sunday, with rival groups targeting members of opposing factions.
Local residents also stated that the increasing cult clashes are driven by the competition for control over revenue from tricycle and shuttle bus operators, involving tickets, emblems, and other sources.
On Easter Sunday, six individuals were reportedly killed in the city due to cult-related issues.
Additionally, on the same Sunday, three people were reportedly shot dead in the city, contributing to heightened tension in the area.
When asked about the incident on Tuesday, the state police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated, “The command is aware of the unconfirmed reports of the cult-related killing of a man known as ‘Nwanayoeze’ today in Awka.
“Our officers were dispatched to the scene immediately, but no evidence was found. Meanwhile, we are collaborating with local residents to determine what occurred.
“Furthermore, police patrols have been increased in Awka.”
