On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver discussed the death penalty in the US, highlighting problems with red-state Republicans in Alabama.
Oliver stated:
Earlier this year, Alabama carried out its first nitrogen gas execution, which was reported to be extremely horrific. A witness described the deceased as someone who was fighting for their life, and another person who had seen five executions said it was the most violent one they had ever witnessed.
Afterwards, the state’s AG celebrated the execution, claiming that it was successful and praising the execution team for carrying out the first nitrogen execution in the country. He predicted that many states would follow suit, stating that this method was no longer untested but proven. John Oliver criticized this as nonsense and also commented on Alabama's history of being at the forefront of negative actions.
Oliver also brought up evidence suggesting that states and the Trump administration have been illegally obtaining execution drugs and condemned the barbaric methods the United States uses for executions. He highlighted that this episode was a valuable continuation of Last Week Tonight's previous coverage on the topic.
