PLAINS TWP. — Team Ferenchick took the lead early in the game on Friday night by hitting a 3-point shot and continued making them.
Ferenchick made 14 shots from beyond the arc, often to stop Team Rapson's momentum, and won 76-66 in the George P. Moses Wyoming Valley Conference Girls Senior All-Star Classic at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.
Mackenzie Perluke from Wyoming Valley West scored 22 points, including two 3-pointers, and was chosen as Ferenchick’s Most Valuable Player.
“It was enjoyable,” Perluke said. “We always played against each other, so playing on the same team was a good way to end our high school career.”
Angelina Corridoni from Holy Redeemer scored the most points for Rapson, 16, but did not make any 3-point shots, and was named the Most Valuable Player.
Corridoni also won the 3-point contest at halftime, scoring one more than MMI Prep’s Bria Kringe, 7-6. The preliminary rounds occurred on Monday. Corridoni did not attempt many 3-pointers during the season for the Royals.
“I like making 3-pointers,” Corridoni said, “but I usually don't have the opportunity to take them. I made some 3-pointers this past year, but there were other 3-point shooters on my team, so I didn't have the chance to do it often.”
Perluke’s 3-pointer at 9:22 of the first quarter (the teams played four 10-minute quarters) gave Ferenchick a 5-2 lead.
Perluke, Kringe, Valley West’s Alissa Laudenslager, and Hazleton Area’s Haley Yost also made 3-pointers as Ferenchick took a 23-15 lead into the second quarter.
Nanticoke Area’s Claire Aufiero began the second quarter with a drive to the basket, and WBA’s Mahogany Robinson followed with two more as Rapson came within 23-21.
Ferenchick, however, got a 3-pointer from Valley West’s Gabby Marsola and later another from Berwick’s RaeAnna Andres after Rapson came within 28-25 with four minutes left in the second quarter.
Perluke then scored six consecutive points as Ferenchick entered halftime with a 39-34 lead.
Three-pointers by Wyoming Area’s Morgan Slusser stopped another attempted comeback by Rapson early in the third quarter. Consecutive 3-pointers by Berwick’s Alyssa Lewis and Marsola increased Ferenchick’s lead to 56-45 late in the period.
Berwick’s Gabby Starr and Yost started the fourth quarter with two more 3-pointers as Ferenchick took a 64-51 lead.
Rapson came within 66-61 with two minutes left as Corridoni and high school teammate Lucie Racicky each scored four points in a 10-2 run. Ferenchick ended it with its final 3-pointer, this one from Lake-Lehman’s Brenna Hunt.
