The community of Penticton, B.C., is saddened by the passing of its cherished informal symbol.
Since 2022, a goose named Kevin, who had a broken wing, has been walking around Penticton. He became well-known for frequently being seen at the beach of Okanagan Lake.
For the past few years, a group of caring individuals known as “Team Kevin” have been taking care of the goose, ensuring he was well-fed, photographed, and felt loved.
Last week, the goose was taken to a vet after being attacked by an unleashed dog, which resulted in a broken leg. Sadly, this was the second dog attack in three weeks, and Kevin did not survive.
The people who looked after Kevin are deeply affected by this loss, and a tribute event has been scheduled for Sunday at Slackwater Brewing in Penticton.
Members of the community are encouraged to come together and reminisce about their beloved goose from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“Our community recently lost a dear friend,” stated the announcement for the gathering at Slackwater.
During the event on Sunday, a portion of the proceeds from beer sales and special Kevin-themed items from The Graphically Hip will be given to the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.
Noted artist Kindrie Grove will also be creating a live painting at the location. Once completed, the artwork will be exhibited at the Aurora Matheson Fine Art Gallery.
“The Interior Wildlife Rehab Centre is the only certified center for rehabilitating wildlife in the Okanagan region north of Oliver,” was mentioned in the announcement from Slackwater Brewing.
“It operates as a non-profit and relies entirely on private donations, community grants, and support from local businesses. Its goal is to promote the peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife. Our aim is to raise awareness about their work and make a generous donation in Kevin’s name.”
