The police reported that two people were killed in a crash on Thursday afternoon in southeast B.C.
Creston RCMP reported that the crash involving two vehicles happened on Highway 3 at around 5:30 p.m., near the community of Kitchener, which is about 15 minutes east of Creston.
The eastbound vehicle moved into the opposite lane and crashed head-on with a westbound vehicle, according to the police.
Creston RCMP stated that when they arrived at the scene, emergency crews worked urgently to help the three people involved in the crash.
The eastbound vehicle, with only one person inside, stopped down an embankment by a river, which made it difficult for rescue crews.
The westbound vehicle, with a driver and a passenger, stopped on the highway’s shoulder.
Both drivers, a 33-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man from the Creston area, were killed.
Police mentioned that the passenger in the westbound vehicle was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
“The cause of the crash is still being investigated, but it is suspected that alcohol impairment might have been a factor,” said Creston RCMP.
They also stated that no criminal investigation will happen since both drivers are deceased.
Staff Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk said, “This incident is a truly tragic loss of life.”
Several civilians witnessed the event or took part in the rescue efforts.
“If you were involved and are experiencing trauma from this event, please seek support,” urged the police.
Police offered condolences to the friends and families of those involved and emphasized that such collisions can be unsettling for everyone, including emergency responders.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the crash is urged to contact the Creston RCMP at 250-428-9313.
