Former B.C. Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo has died. She was 92.
Government House was informed of her passing on Friday morning and has lowered its flag to half-mast.
The official residence of the lieutenant-governor of British Columbia, known as Government House, has stated that funeral arrangements are being made.
A statement will be released by Government House later Friday.
Campagnolo was born in Vancouver on October 18, 1932. She gained fame as a broadcaster and received a B.C. Broadcaster of the Year award, as per the Northern BC Archives.
On September 21, 2001, Campagnolo was appointed as B.C.’s first female lieutenant-governor by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.
She served in that role until September 30, 2007.
Following 2007, Campagnolo continued to be involved with two major B.C. issues — reconciling Indigenous rights and title with crown title, and salmon sustainability, as per archives.
