On Friday, President Bola Tinubu thanked Mr Jim Obazee, the Central Bank Investigator, for his work, officially ending the lengthy investigation.
After the completion of the assignment and the submission of a final detailed report, and with the dismantling of all equipment used during the task, which ended on March 31, 2024, the investigation is officially closed, according to a statement on Friday by the President's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
The President expressed his gratitude to Jim Obazee, the special investigator of the CBN, as the investigation concluded.
Tinubu mentioned that following the conclusion of the investigations, all relevant law enforcement and regulatory agencies have commenced follow-up actions.
The President praised Obazee for his dedication and professionalism while handling this important national assignment.
He thanked the CBN's investigator for responding to the duty call and wished him success in his future endeavors.
On July 30, 2023, the President appointed Obazee as a special investigator to examine the apex bank and related entities. appointed In a letter dated July 28, 2023, Tinubu based Obazee's appointment on the fundamental objective outlined in Section 15(5) of the Nigerian constitution, stating it was in line with his administration's anti-corruption efforts.
The investigation commenced immediately.
During the eight months of investigations, Obazee was required to take immediate measures to ensure the strengthening and integrity of key Government Business Entities and to prevent leaks in the CBN and related GBEs.
Tinubu also instructed him to produce a comprehensive report on public assets presently held by corrupt individuals and establishments, whether private or public.
Obazee was also tasked with investigating the CBN and related entities using a suitably experienced, competent, and capable team, and collaborating with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to accomplish the assignment.
He was directed to provide the president with weekly updates on the progress of the assignment.
In the letter, Tinubu reminded Obazee about his directive to suspend the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, on June 9, 2023.
Subsequently, Emefiele was arrested in his Lagos home by Department of State Services operatives and transported to Abuja.
