An unidentified woman died and two other people got hurt as a large vehicle hit pedestrians on the Onitsha-Asaba bridge.
The crash happened on Thursday and was caused by the truck's brakes failing.
A witness said the driver lost control of the vehicle as it descended the River Niger bridge towards Asaba, leading to it hitting pedestrians on the roadside.
C. A Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer for Public Education of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, confirmed the crash in a statement.
Iyiegbuniwe stated, 'The crash occurred today, April 4, 2024, around 3:20 in the afternoon along Onitsha-Asaba Bridgehead.'
'It involved a white and green Mercedes Benz truck with registration number NKE25LG.'
'The truck had brake failure and hit people. Two were injured and one woman was killed.'
'Upon arrival at the scene, FRSC personnel took the two injured individuals to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, and the deceased to Toronto Mortuary.'
Iyiegbuniwe quoted the Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, as expressing sympathy for the victims' families.
He also advised drivers to regularly maintain their vehicles and follow traffic rules.
