A socio-political group called Delta Development Initiative has asked the governor of Delta State, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to promptly establish a project monitoring team. The team is meant to make sure that the monthly federal funds going to the state are used properly.
DDI emphasized the need for Governor Oborevwori to act quickly and select a very reliable project monitoring team to supervise assigned projects.
The group's President, Dr. Majority Orji, issued the advice in a statement that was given to journalists in Warri, Delta State, on Wednesday.
The group expressed concern about the limited development progress in Delta State despite receiving substantial monthly funds.
It specifically mentioned that despite the governance of the Peoples Democratic Party since 1999, measuring the party's success in the state is difficult, as development remains low.
The statement said, “Governor Oborevwori needs to show Delta State politicians that governance involves more than just stealing funds.
“Through his policies, he should emphasize the importance of the people's lives and the development of Delta State.
“Most importantly, it's time to advance Delta's development.
It also stated, “The party's leadership in Delta State seems to be unaware of the worsening socio-economic conditions, or at least it appears so.
“Our internally generated revenue supplements the large central allocation.
“Instead, PDP members in Delta demonstrate a luxurious and careless lifestyle.
“It appears that funds designated for specific purposes are given to party members and then wasted.
“The state's local government system is a unfortunate example. One wonders if they even receive allocations.
“The chairmen of local governments in the state are encouraged to inform the people of Delta about the development initiatives they pursued with the allocated funds.
“It's no surprise that many young people are joining the party. The attraction of easy benefits is undeniable. To be part of the party, they seek support from influential figures. This is a negative development that endangers the state's future.
The statement also urged the governor to boldly declare that it's time to raise Delta's developmental level and focus on strategies to reduce the high number of unemployed young people.
It also suggested that the Delta State government consider revitalizing businesses like Bendel Glass in the Ughelli area, the Mill in Asaba, and the Bendel Steel Structure Company that was formerly situated in Enerhen, as well as developing new companies.
