Nigerian midfielder, Afeez Aremu, desires to finish a disappointing first season with Kaiserslautern positively by clinching the DFB Pokal Cup with the German club, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
It is the first time Kaiserslautern have reached the final since 2003, when they lost to Bayern Munich.
They will face Bayer Leverkusen, who defeated Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-0 in the final on May 25 in Berlin.
Kaiserslautern reached the German Cup final for the first time in 21 years after ending the fairytale run of third-tier side FC Saarbrucken in the semi-final on Tuesday.
To reach the semi-finals, Saarbrucken upset Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Eintracht Frankfurt, but their hopes of reaching the final were dashed by second-half goals from Marlon Ritter and Almamy Toure.
“It’s been a challenging season for me because I’ve been on the sidelines for so long playing just three games,” Aremu told PUNCH Sports Extra.
“But I see light at the end of the season. I believe we can make history by winning the DFB Pokal Cup even though we have a tough opponent in Leverkusen, who are the favorites.
Aremu, whose appearances have been limited to three totaling 46 minutes this season due to recurring thigh injuries and suspension, also believes Kaiserslautern will be underdogs in the final later this month but should not be underestimated.
“I will be happy to see us win but it will be tough,” Aremu said.
“Leverkusen are unbeaten this season and they are favorites to win but we (Kaiserslautern) should not be underrated.”
