Once again, a fire has destroyed the Gamboru market around the Customs area in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Before, on March 18, 2023 and November 13, 2023, fire also destroyed the market which is known as the largest perishable goods market in Maiduguri.
The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Alhaji Usman Tar, confirmed that the fire occurred at the Layin Yan Katako and outer sections of the market.
Tar stated in a release that the incident happened on Wednesday around 10pm and was successfully put out by the fire service.
The Borno State Fire Service promptly sent a team of firefighters to the location and the fire was effectively put out.
He mentioned, “No people were harmed. The security of the market was not at risk of intrusion or damage.”
He explained that the fire service and the State Emergency Management Agency are currently evaluating the incident to determine the causes and prevent future incidents.
The commissioner expressed that the state government will take all measures to prevent fires in the state.
He urged the public to maintain order and ensure the market's safety is not compromised.
“The Borno State Government extends sympathy to all those affected by this incident.
He also appreciated the swift action of the first responders in preventing the fire from spreading across the market space.”
