The Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion will go into commercial service on May 1.
The government-owned organization overseeing the project announced the start date on Wednesday. The project will boost the pipeline's capacity by 590,000 barrels per day to a total of 890,000 barrels per day.
Trans Mountain Corp. has resolved the construction-related issues in B.C.’s Fraser Valley that had been slowing down the project in recent months.
Before the pipeline can start transporting oil, there are still several remaining tasks, including finalizing construction and obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals.
The federal government owns the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project. It took more than four years and at least $34 billion to complete.
The expanded pipeline, which goes from Alberta to the B.C. West Coast, will greatly improve Canadian oil companies’ ability to reach export markets.
