The 77th Cannes Film Festival has chosen a new comedy from director Quentin Dupieux as its opening night film. “The Second Act,” a four-part comedy starring Léa Seydoux, will debut the festival at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Tuesday, May 14. It will be shown but not as part of the competition.
In 2022, Dupieux presented “Smoking Causes Coughing” at Cannes, which was an Official Selection but not in competition. He also creates electronic pop music under the name Mr. Oizo.
The official synopsis describes the movie as follows: “Florence wants to introduce David, the man she’s deeply in love with, to her father Guillaume. But David is not interested in Florence and wants to set her up with his friend Willy. The four characters meet in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere.” Sounds very typical of Dupieux.
Seydoux stars in the movie alongside Vincent Lindon and Louis Garrel, all collaborating with Dupieux for the first time, along with Raphaël Quenard, who has previously appeared in Dupieux’s films “Mandibles,” “Smoking Causes Coughing,” and “Yannick.” The Cannes announcement suggests that the red carpet will be impressive.
Although there are many rumored titles for this year’s festival (including Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End” and David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds”), the only confirmed film for the festival at this time is “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which is related to the “Road Warrior” and is directed by George Miller.
The jury president for this year is Greta Gerwig. The festival will occur between May 14 and 25.
