The Borno State Police Command has verified that they have detained eight people suspected of being involved in the supposed killing of a lecturer at the Department of Physical Health Education at the University of Maiduguri, Dr Kamar Abdulkadir.
Abdulkadir was killed in his office at the university on Sunday.
The victim was discovered on Monday with multiple injuries caused by the person who killed him.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Nahun Daso, told journalists that the attackers also took the lecturer’s car, phone, and laptop.
“We looked at the CCTV camera footage and saw them leaving the university with the deceased’s car. However, the video quality was very poor so we couldn't see how many people were in the car,” he said.
He clarified that an inquiry into the matter was still ongoing.
In response, the Director of Radio and Public Relations, Prof Danjuma Gambo, who represented the vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Shugaba, commented that the police and other security agencies have already initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death.
“Given the seriousness of the situation, management advises all staff and students to stay calm and continue their usual, lawful activities because the University is closely collaborating with relevant security agencies to get to the bottom of the matter.
“Management also wants to ensure parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that the University campus remains safe and secure for teaching, learning, and community service.
“Management appreciates the numerous messages of sympathy and support from all its stakeholders in this moment of grief,” Gambo said.
