Calgary police have given a warning to the public following a series of break-ins that focus on new houses and houses under construction throughout the city.
Authorities say that the area most affected is Belvedere in the southeast community and the stolen items include appliances, electrical boxes, siding, windows, doors, and other building materials.
Sgt. Nick Wilsher from the Calgary Police Service crime prevention team urged new homeowners and construction workers who have been targeted to report the incidents to the police.
The stolen items suggest that home entrances may have been left unlocked, making it easier for thieves. Citizens are reminded to secure their homes and for construction workers to remain watchful to prevent crime.
The police also gave advice on preventing break-ins, such as installing security cameras, alarm systems, and outdoor motion lights.Other tips include closing blinds, documenting valuables and their serial numbers, using tracking devices for cars and valuables, and being cautious of unfamiliar visitors in shared entrances in multi-unit complexes.
Additionally, they recommend getting to know neighbors, reporting any suspicious activity to the police, securing entrances at construction sites, and obtaining detailed descriptions of unfamiliar individuals and filming suspicious behavior.
