Mr Isaacs Kekemeke, the National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, announced on Tuesday that he wants to run for governor of Ondo State as a member of the ruling party.
He announced this a few days before the party's primary, scheduled for April 20, 2024.
At least 15 party leaders are vying for the party's ticket at the primary.
In the 2020 governorship election, Kekemeke aimed to become the state's governor, but he lost the party's ticket to the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. He believes he is more prepared for the governorship race now than he was four years ago.
Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Akure, Kekemeke stated that he has enough experience to lead the state to economic prosperity and peace.
He explained that his desire to become the state governor is not a sudden decision, but comes from his belief that he can make the state better.
Kekemeke said, “In the last primary election, although we didn't win, we gained the support of the people of Ondo State. There is no doubt that we are better prepared than we were four years ago.
“Today, the state urgently needs experienced leadership. It is facing political challenges and negative publicity. It requires a leader who is well-versed in party administration and governance.
“Ondo State needs a leader who understands the philosophy of the current Federal Government and its Renewed Hope programme and can collaborate effectively.
The state cannot afford to be held back by pettiness, low sentiments, and prejudices. We need a leader for the whole state, not just a part. We need a governor who is not indifferent.
Kekemeke outlined his vision and mission for the state, which includes creating a peaceful and prosperous environment for citizens to work and live comfortably, and using information science and technology to boost government revenue and create wealth.
“I am ready to take on the responsibility of being the governor, as my past service to the state proves that I have not let you down,” he said.
Other aspirants of the party include Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, former Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, former House of Representatives member, Mr Mayowa Akinfolarin, former Special Adviser to Governor Akeredolu on Health, Prof Francis Faduyile, and former governorship aspirant of the APC, Chief Olusola Oke.
Others are former chairman of the Ondo State Oil-producing Areas Development Commission, Mr Gbenga Edema, Senator representing Ondo South, Jimoh Ibrahim, and Brig. Gen. Olamide Ohunyeye (retd.).
