The documentary “Quiet on the Set” revealed years of child abuse at Nickelodeon during the 1990s and early 2000s. Since then, there have been widespread calls for people who worked at the network, especially those who may have been abused, to speak up.
Piper Curda, a former child performer with Disney during the 2010s, had a strong response to the calls for Nickelodeon stars to speak out about potential abuse: “Stop that, don’t do that.”
Curda shared this comment in a video on TikTok, expressing her view that pressuring Nickelodeon stars to reveal potential abuse stories is “insane behavior.
Curda clarified that her comments were not because of an “influx of inquiries” directed at herself. “I just want to, I don’t know, ask you guys to be less weird,” she said.
In the same video, Curda criticized people pressuring Nickelodeon stars to speak out, stating that it's unreasonable to expect them to come forward with their own abuse stories. She highlighted the inappropriateness of pressuring individuals to share personal, dramatic moments when they have not previously participated in the conversation.
Curda was referring to situations like a recent episode of “The View,” where co-host Sunny Hostin suggested that anyone with information about the Nickelodeon period discussed in the documentary should come forward. She emphasized the courage required to speak out as a true ally.
Curda disagreed with this perspective, urging people to refrain from making assumptions and pressuring individuals to share their stories if they are not comfortable doing so.
Curda also advised against assuming that everyone in the entertainment industry as a child experienced the same challenges, urging people to avoid pushing others to fabricate stories.
In addition, she highlighted the importance of respecting the personal space and privacy of individuals who were once child actors, emphasizing that they are real people with real experiences.
