A total of 2,889 students studying education-related courses in Nigerian higher institutions have received the N75,000 bursary awards, according to data presented by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during the first quarterly meeting of the Federal Ministry of Education.
The ministry had in 2022 called for applications from eligible students studying Education courses in universities and colleges of education.
During the celebration of World Teachers Day in 2021, the Federal Government stated that students pursuing degree programmes in Education in public universities would receive a N75,000 stipend per semester, while their counterparts pursuing the Nigeria Certificate in Education would receive N50,000 per semester.
Mamman noted on Tuesday that 2,889 students have benefited from the scheme.
Mamman also provided statistics on other schemes under the Federal Scholarship Board, saying, “345 individuals are recipients of the Bilateral Education Agreement scholarship, 51 for the commonwealth scholarship, 2,122 beneficiaries under the Nigerian Scholarship Award and 724 beneficiaries under the Teachers Internship Scheme.”
The Minister of State for Education, Tanko Sununu, mentioned that the quarterly citizenship engagement was intended to raise awareness of the ministry's activities.
He also stated that the engagement will “promote mutual understanding with stakeholders and citizens; build and maintain public trust; and enhance transparency and accountability in the sector.
“It is worth mentioning that this engagement also aims to improve efficiency and streamline government operations by identifying and addressing bottlenecks.”
