The Delta State government reports that two million people have signed up for the state’s health insurance program over the course of seven years.
Dr. Isaac Okpoveta, the Director General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, announced this on Monday while handing out health insurance cards to 100 enrollees at Onicha-Olona in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
He mentioned, “I am very happy to be here today to celebrate the great generosity and kindness of the Oganishu Umu Ogbekenu Foundation, which has set a wonderful example for everyone to follow.
“The foundation purchased health insurance for 100 vulnerable individuals in the community in response to the call from the DSCHC for all well-meaning people to join the Indigent enrollee adoption initiative of the commission.
“This is not just an act of charity; it is a display of deep empathy and a real commitment to the well-being of our people.
“Today, through these initiatives, we have been able to significantly increase healthcare coverage and improve health outcomes for our people.
“As of the end of March 2024, our enrolment statistics show that two million people have been insured. This number proves the trust and confidence that the people of Delta State have in our commission and its programs.
“Healthcare should not be a luxury for only a privileged few; it is a basic human right that must be ensured for all.”
Okpoveta praised the foundation for buying health insurance for the vulnerable members of the community, stating that the foundation had shown an understanding of the principle behind the scheme.
He explained that with just N7,000, an individual could buy a health insurance card to receive quality healthcare throughout the year.
