The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has fired three employees of Kabo General Hospital and put on hold three others for supposed demand of money.
The firing and suspension of the impacted staff were authorized by the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, after an unplanned visit to the facility.
This information is in a message by the Public Relations Officer of the Hospitals Management Board, Samira Suleiman, a copy of which was given to The PUNCH on Monday.
As per the statement, three staff members of the X-ray unit were caught asking patients N12,000 for X-rays instead of the approved hospital price of N2,000 and without any proof of payment, resulting in the facility performing less than 10 X-rays per week even though the 2 X-ray batteries are functional.
“The Executive Secretary of the board approved the immediate dismissal of the three officers for charging patients unlawfully.
“Also, the Executive Secretary approved the suspension of the Accountant, Auditor, and Head of the laboratory for selling free HIV test kits provided to facilities by the state government and were instructed to report to the board headquarters for further disciplinary actions.
‘’Additionally, the ES explained that the Labour ward was in poor condition, lacking bed sheets, compound officers, and equipment donated four years ago, as well as unused COVID-19 items donated to the facility.
“The Executive Secretary, who pledged not to overlook any staff member found at fault, said the decision against the affected workers should deter others.
“We took an oath, so we will stick to that oath and clean up the system.
‘’It is unfortunate that despite the state government ensuring that every health worker is on the CONHESS salary scale, they are still taking advantage of innocent patients,” the statement read.
During the visit, the Executive Secretary of the board was accompanied by the DG of the Kano Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Muhammad Abbas, and the DG of the State Agency for the Control of Aids, Dr. Usman Bashir.
