Mohamed Salah led Liverpool to the top of the Premier League by scoring a decisive goal in a strong comeback to defeat Brighton 2-1 on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s team were shaken by Danny Welbeck’s impressive goal only 85 seconds into the match at Anfield.
Luis Diaz leveled the score with a goal later in the first half, before Salah scored after halftime to secure an important win.
Salah's 22nd goal in all competitions this season was his third goal in the last three games.
Liverpool, undefeated in their last six league matches, are now three points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who will play against third-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium later on Sunday.
An Arsenal win would move them above Liverpool based on goal difference. Any other result would keep Liverpool in the lead.
For the first time in 10 years, the top three teams in the Premier League were separated by just one point after 28 games before this weekend’s matches.
Thanks to Salah, Liverpool, who are chasing a treble, remain strong contenders for a 20th English title, which would equal the record, in Klopp’s final season.
Liverpool, undefeated in their last 27 home league games, will play at Anfield against lowly Sheffield United on Thursday.
After former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso confirmed he plans to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi is reportedly a candidate to replace Klopp when he steps down at the end of this term.
Klopp admires De Zerbi’s attacking approach and praised him as a “top coach” this week.
Playing for the first time since their painful FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Manchester United before the international break, Liverpool experienced the impact of De Zerbi’s daring tactics just two minutes into the game.
